Vandal_Character Development
on Jul 29 in 3D, Character, Portfolio, Slider by rachelA few people from work have decided to come together on a personal project. It’s great to get started on a project outside of work. Love the creative process of developing a story.
While the director, Cody Cisneros, is working on the story concept I was tasked to model the lead character. Janet Kim developed several great concepts for the character design.
Below is the first character concepts created. After much thought Cody decided he wanted the clothing to be less form fitting and the characters face to have a more realistic feel.
So Janet came up with another concept which fits more line with the director’s vision.

However, he still wasn’t quite sure of the face. During a conversation Cody and I were talking about his sister coming to town. Then all of sudden it hit him. We should use his sister’s face as reference for the character. He gave me two images start the modeling process.
When I usually start a modeling project I study the image and visually plan out my edge loop flow. I sometimes draw it out while other times I see it in my head. For this character I decided to do both. I started drawing out my edge loops but, decided to get started. Sometimes I find if you over think the process it doesn’t come together organically.
So early this morning around 2pm ( couldn’t sleep my son kicking me …) I started modeling the face. Some people box model. But for me poly by poly modeling is faster and allows me to see the shape of the character. After about 1.5 hours the face is nearly laid out. My plans are to have it completed in less than a week.
